Frequently Asked Questions

What are the minimum requirements for using PushMail? PushMail by itself is small; it installs in less than 1MB on your hard disk. You do need the following, however:
  • Digital cellular phone (WAP or Web-phone not required!) with text messaging1 or alphanumeric pager
  • Email dispatching for phone or pager.2
  • SMTP and POP3 email.
1Your cellular service provider may only offer text messaging as an option with an additional montly fee.

2Most service providers offer email dispatching. It is a feature that allows email to be sent to your cellular phone or pager by assigning an email address to the device (usually phonenumber@service.com). Check with your service provider regarding availability.

How much does PushMail cost? PushMail has a one-time charge of $19.95. It is not a subscription service. Your only other additional charges may be for the text messaging service from your cellular service provider.

I use dial-up networking. Does PushMail require full-time connection to the internet? No. PushMail uses the PushPage Scheduler which will make a dial-up connection only when it needs to access your mailbox. It will disconnect when done, although it will stay connected if another mailbox needs to be accessed within five minutes (you can change this setting in the configuration).

Doesn't my cellular provider offer a service like PushMail? Yes and no. Some cellular providers will notify you of new messages, and some will let you view your email, but you have to change your email address to one on their servers, and you have to make a wireless internet connection to view the email, which takes longer than just viewing a text message. And some cellular providers charge more for wireless internet connections than for text messaging. See the comparison chart below.

  • You can use your existing mailbox.
  • The messages are waiting on your phone.
  • Replies come from your email account.3
  • Runs on your desktop computer.
  • You must use a mailbox on your provider's server.
  • You have to make a wireless internet connection to view messages.
  • Replies come from your cellular phone mailbox.3
  • Runs on provider's computers.
3Reply handling is important. If you regular mailbox is johndoe@isp.net and your cell phone mailbox is 5551212@csp.com, you would probably prefer that a reply sent from your cell phone looks like it was sent from johndoe@isp.net instead of 5551212@csp.com because replies to your replies would then end up in your johndoe account so the parts of an email conversation is all in one mailbox.
